How it works

The active substance latanoprost, a prostaglandin F2a analogue, is a selective prostanoid FP receptor agonist which reduces the IOP by increasing the outflow of aqueous humour. Reduction of the IOP in man starts about three to four hours after administration and maximum effect is reached after eight to twelve hours. Pressure reduction is maintained for at least 24 hours.

• A gradual change in your eye colour by increasing the amount of brown pigment in the coloured part of the eye known as the iris • Redness of the eye. • Eye irritation (a feeling of burning, grittiness, itching, stinging or the sensation of a foreign body in the eye). • A gradual change to eyelashes of the treated eye and the fine hairs around the treated eye • Irritation or disruption to the surface of the eye (punctate keratitis), eyelid inflammation (blepharitis), eye pain and light sensitivity (photophobia) conjunctivitis.

Drug Interactions

Latanoprost may interact with other medicines. Tell your doctor, the doctor treating your child or your pharmacist if you or your child are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.

Indication

Latanoprost is used to treat conditions known as open angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension in adults.It is also used to treat increased eye pressure and glaucoma in all ages of children and babies.

When not to Use

• If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to latanoprost or any of the other ingredients of this medicine • If you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant • If you are breast feeding .

Precautions

Precaution

It may gradually change eye colour by increasing the amount of brown pigment in the iris. Before treatment is instituted, patients should be informed of the possibility of a permanent change in eye colour. Unilateral treatment can result in permanent heterochromia.

Warnings

Warning 1

There are limited study data on the use of Latanoprost during the peri-operative period of cataract surgery. It should be used with caution in these patients.

Warning 2

Latanoprost may gradually change eyelashes and vellus hair in the treated eye and surrounding areas; these changes include increased length, thickness, pigmentation, number of lashes or hairs and misdirected growth of eyelashes. Eyelash changes are reversible upon discontinuation of treatment.

Warning 3

It should be used with caution in patients with a history of herpetic keratitis, and should be avoided in cases of active herpes simplex keratitis and in patients with a history of recurrent herpetic keratitis specifically associated with prostaglandin analogues.
