How it works
Rivaroxaban is a highly selective direct Factor Xa inhibitor. Inhibition of Factor Xa interrupts the intrinsic and extrinsic pathway of the blood coagulation cascade, inhibiting both thrombin formation and development of thrombi. Rivaroxaban does not inhibit thrombin (activated Factor II) and has no effects on platelets.

Common side-effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people) :Bleeding following your operation , anaemia (reduction in the quantity of oxygen-carrying material (haemoglobin) in the blood) , feeling sick (nausea) , blood tests may show an increase in some liver enzymes. Uncommon side-effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people) : Bleeding in your stomach or bowel, genital bleeding, nose bleed , haematoma (an accumulation of blood within the tissue that clots to form a solid swelling), bruising , blood in your urine , oozing from surgical wound , raised heart beat (tachycardia) , low blood pressure , feeling unwell (weakness, tiredness), headache, dizziness, fainting. Rare side-effects (may affect up to 1 in 1000 people) : Impaired function of your liver , allergic skin reactions
Drug Interactions
Some medicines for fungal infections (e.g. ketoconazole) , Anti-viral medicines for HIV / AIDS (e.g. ritonavir) , other medicines to reduce blood clotting (e.g. enoxaparin or clopidogrel) , anti-inflammatory and pain relieving medicines (e.g. naproxen or acetylsalicylic acid).
Indication
It is used to prevent blood clots in your veins after a major operation on your legs.
When not to Use
Do not rivaroxaban and tell your doctor if any of the following apply to you: If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to rivaroxaban or any of the other ingredients in the list or If you are bleeding excessively or If you have severe liver disease which leads to an increased risk of bleeding or If you are pregnant or breast feeding.
Precautions
Precaution
As with other anticoagulants, patients taking rivaroxaban are to be carefully observed for signs of bleeding. It is recommended to be used with caution in conditions with increased risk of hemorrhage. Rivaroxaban administration should be discontinued if severe hemorrhage occurs.
Warnings
Warning 1
Rivaroxaban is to be used with caution in patients with creatinine clearance 15 - 29 ml/min. Use is not recommended in patients with creatinine clearance .
Warning 2
Treatment with rivaroxaban is not recommended for the patients with prosthetic heart valves.
Warning 3
Patients with malignant disease may simultaneously be at higher risk of bleeding and thrombosis. The individual benefit of antithrombotic treatment should be weighed against risk for bleeding in patients with active cancer dependent on tumour location, antineoplastic therapy and stage of disease. Tumours located in the gastrointestinal or genitourinary tract have been associated with an increased risk of bleeding during rivaroxaban therapy.
