How it works

Flupenthixol acts by blocking the dopamine (a neurotransmitter) receptors in the brain cells. Excess amount of dopamine receptors normally act to modify behavior and over-stimulation resulting in psychotic illness. Flupenthixol blocks these receptors to control psychotic illness. Thus it is neuroleptic with anxiolytic and antidepressant properties.

Drug Interactions

Alcohol, barbiturates and other CNS depressants. MAO-inhibitors,neuroleptics, guanethidine, adrenaline and noradrenaline.

Indication

lt is Indicated for the management of anxiety, depression, apathy, psychogenic depression, depressive neuroses, masked depression, psychosomatic affections accompanied by anxiety and apathy, menopausal depressions, dysphoria and depression in alcoholics & drug addicts.

When not to Use

Not recommended for excitable or overactive patients since its activating effect may lead to exaggeration of these characteristics. If the patient has previously been treated with tranquillizers or neuroleptics withsedative effect, these should be withdrawn gradually.

Precaution

Keep all medicines out of the reach and sight of children. Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and light.

Warning 1

It should be used with caution in patients with organic brain syndrome, convulsion, urinary retention, hyperthyroidism and advanced hepatic or cardiovascular disease. It should not be administered together with MAOIs.

Warning 2

Suicide/suicidal thoughts or clinical worsening.

It should be used with caution in patients receiving SSRIs.
