How it works

It contains the active ingredient lormetazepam, and belongs to the group of medicines called benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines increase the action of GABA (a chemical messenger), which helps calm the brain down. This results in promotion of sleep .

Side Effects

Very common (may affect more than 1 user in 10): • headache. Common (may affect 1 to 10 users in 100): • rapid swelling of the skin or the lining of the mouth and throat which can lead to obstruction of your airways (angioedema) • feeling anxious • reduced sex drive • dizziness, sedation, sleepiness, reduced attention, loss of memory (amnesia), problems with your sight or speech, an unusual sense of taste (dysgeusia), slowed thinking • fast heart rate • vomiting, feeling sick (nausea), upper stomach pain, constipation, dry mouth • itching (pruritis) • difficulty passing urine • reduced vitality (asthenia)

Drug Interactions

• Medicines used to treat mental illness, depression, anxiety and mood disorders • Medicines which make you drowsy or tired • Strong painkillers and anaesthetics • Medicines used to treat epilepsy • Medicines for allergies that can cause drowsiness (e.g. antihistamines or cold medication) • Medicines used for congestive heart failure (e.g. digoxin) and arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) (e.g. beta-blockers) • Medicines used for chronic bronchitis or asthma (e.g. theophylline, xanthine) • Oestrogen-containing medicines • Rifampicin, a medicine used to treat tuberculosis and other serious infections .

Indication

It is used to treat sleeping problems; this includes difficulty in falling asleep.

When not to Use

Do not take if: You have an allergy to lormetazepam, the active ingredient ; or any other benzodiazepines • You have an allergy to any of the ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet • You suffer from myasthenia gravis (a condition in which the muscles become weak and tire easily).

Precautions

Precaution

It may cause a short term loss of memory (anterograde amnesia). This occurs most often in the first few hours after taking the medicine. Make sure that you will be able to sleep without interruption for at least 7-8 hours in order to reduce this risk.

Warnings

Warning 1

Talk to your doctor before using Lormetazepam if you have severe breathing or chest problems .

Warning 2

Talk to your doctor before using Lormetazepam if you suffer from sleep apnoea (breathing problems when you are asleep) .

Warning 3

Talk to your doctor before using Lormetazepam tablets if you have myasthenia gravis (very weak or tired muscles) .
