How it works
Acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), the active ingredient in Acetylcysteine exerts an intense mucolytic-fluidizing action on mucous and mucopurulent secretions by depolymerizing the mucoproteic complexes and the nucleic acids which confer viscosity to the vitreous and purulent component of the sputum and other secretions.

Indication
Acetylcysteine is indicated as adjuvant therapy for patients with abnormal, viscid, or inspissated lmucous secretions in such conditions as: Chronic bronchopulmonary disease (chronic emphysema, emphysema with bronchitis, chronic asthmatic bronchitis, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis and primary amyloidosis of the Lung); Acute bronchopulmonary disease (pneumonia, lbronchitis, tracheobronchitis); Pulmonary complications of cystic fibrosis; Post-traumatic chest conditions; Atelectasis due to mucous obstruction; Diagnostic bronchial studies (bronchograms, bronchospirometry, and bronchial wedge catheterization).
When not to Use
Acetylcysteine is contraindicated in those patients who are sensitive to it and those patients with gastroduodenal ulcers.
Precautions
Precaution
Acetylcysteine should be used with caution in asthmatic patients, elderly or debilitated patients with severe respiratory insufficiency.
Warnings
Warning 1
There are no adequate and controlled studies using acetylcysteine in pregnant women. The drug should be used during pregnancy only when clearly needed.
Warning 2
Make sure someone is with you when you take acetylcysteine. You’re at increased risk of wheezing, tightness in your chest, and trouble breathing (bronchospasm) after inhaling this drug.
Warning 3
Don’t take this drug again if you’ve ever had an allergic reaction to it. Taking it again could be fatal (cause death).
