How it works

This medicine works by improving blood flow in the inner ear. This lowers the build up of pressure.

Side Effects

Mild stomach problems such as being sick (vomiting), stomach pain, stomach swelling (abdominal distension) and bloating. Taking Betahistine with food can help reduce stomach problems. If any of the side effects become serious, or if you notice any side effects that are not listed in the leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist.

Drug Interactions

In particular, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medicines: Anti-histamines - This is because in theory it may not work properly. Also, it may lower the effect of anti-histamines. Monoamine-oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) - used to treat depression or Parkinson’s Disease. These may increase the exposure.

Indication

It is used for: Ménière’s disease – the signs of this include: Feeling dizzy (vertigo) , Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) , Hearing loss or hearing difficulty.

When not to Use

Do not take if: You are allergic (hypersensitive) to betahistine or any of the other ingredients , You have high blood pressure due to an adrenal gland tumour (phaeochromocytoma).

Take special care and tell your doctor if: You have ever had a stomach ulcer , You have asthma , You are pregnant or planning to become pregnant , You are breast-feeding. If any of the above applies to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine. Your doctor may want to monitor you more closely while you take this medicine. Your doctor will tell you whether it is safe for you to start taking this medicine.

Warnings

Warning 1

It is not recommended for those under 18 years old.

It can be taken with or without food. However, it can cause mild stomach problems . Taking with food can help reduce stomach problems.

Warning 3

It is not likely to affect your ability to drive or use tools or machinery. However, remember that the disease for which you are being treated with Betahistine Dihydrochloride (Ménière’s disease) can make you feel dizzy or sick, and can affect your ability to drive and use machines.
