Secnidazole

Used For

Bacterial Infection

How it works

Secnidazole is a 5-nitroimidazole antimicrobial. 5-nitroimidazoles enter the bacterial cell as an inactive prodrug where the nitro group is reduced by bacterial enzymes to radical anions. It is believed that these radical anions interfere with bacterial DNA synthesis of susceptible isolates.

Usage And Safety

Dosage

Secnidazole

Side Effects

Most frequent side-effects: Gastrointestinal disturbances, nausea, epigastric pain, metallic taste, glossitis, and stomatitis. Occasional side-effects: Urticaria, moderate leukopenia which is reversible on treatment discontinuation. Rare side-effects: Vertigo, ataxia and motor incoordination, paresthesia, and peripheral neuropathy. With secnidazole, gastrointestinal disorders e.g. nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, etc. have been reported in very rare cases.

Drug Interactions

Disulfiram , warfarin , ethinyl estradiol plus norethindrone .

Indication

It is indicated for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis in adult women.

When not to Use

Secnidazole is contraindicated for those patients who are hypersensitive to imidazole derivatives.

Precautions

Precaution

Prescribing secnidazole in the absence of proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection or a prophylactic indication is unlikely to provide benefit to the patient and increases the risk of the development of drug-resistant bacteria .

Warnings

Warning 1

Vulvovaginal candidiasis may occur; symptomatic vulvovaginal candidiasis may require treatment with an antifungal agent .

Warning 2

Carcinogenicity has been seen in mice and rats treated long term with nitroimidazole derivatives, which are structurally related to secnidazole; avoid long-term use of secnidazole .

Warning 3

Avoid chronic use; carcinogenicity reported in mice and rats treated chronically with nitroimidazole derivatives, structurally related to secnidazole; significance unclear .
